Setting the Scene: An Artisan’s Workflow

The Workbench: A heavy, solid wood table provides the stability needed for hand-stitching. The pony is clamped firmly to the edge, often at a height that allows the crafter to sit comfortably while working.
Essential Companion Tools:
- - Saddle Needles: Two needles are used simultaneously to create an interlocking stitch that is far stronger than a machine lockstitch.
  - Thread & Wax: Thick, braided polyester or linen thread is pulled through beeswax to lubricate it, making it easier to pull through tight holes while also protecting the fiber from moisture.
  - Marking & Piercing: Before stitching, tools like stitching chisels or a diamond awl are used to pre-pierce the clean, angled holes seen in high-end leather goods.
Protective Details: To keep the tool from marking the work, the wooden jaws of the pony are typically padded with soft leather scraps, felt, or cork.
